About Beyond Boundaries

Beyond Boundaries, founded in 1993, is a grassroots group based in Syracuse, NY. Beyond Boundaries (BB) encourages cross-cultural understanding and self-awareness.

MISSION STATEMENT:

Beyond Boundaries hopes to build in Central New York, in the United States, and abroad, modest but lasting and just relationships across cultural and class boundaries. To do so, we select projects in local, national, and international places. Part of our mission is to make traveling a possibility for each of our members, not just those who can afford it.

At present, BB focuses on West African, African-American, Puerto Rican and Native cultures. We have built a partnership with CENSUDI in Bolgatanga, Ghana, West Africa. On the Gullah Island of St. Helena off the coast of South Carolina, we now know the staff at the historic Penn Center.
We have friends in Loiza, Cayey, Yabucoa and San Juan, Puerto Rico who are family members of Puerto Rican Syracusans. From Native peoples we have learned about Lakota, Haudenosaunee, Chippewa and Algonquin history and culture.

MEMBERSHIP:

YOU CAN BE A BB MEMBER by signing up for an awareness project.  If you want to travel on BB’s annual awareness trip you must commit to:

· attending monthly meetings,

· paying for your own trip expenses, and

· helping out with publicity and local awareness-raising events.

We are striving for a diverse and welcoming group.
