The 2008-2009 African-American Awareness Project Understanding Who We Are: Slavery and Our Roots

Beginning in October, people wishing to go on BB’s April weeklong exploratory trip must attend monthly meetings (held on Sundays), help out on local events around this year’s theme and pay $450 towards their trip expenses. Since BB must pay a hefty down payment to reserve the Arnett House at the Penn Center on St. Helena Island (South Carolina), participants must commit to the project early and pay a $100 non-refundable deposit by BB’s November 16th meeting. The trip will be limited to 15 persons. Children, 10 and older, are welcome on the trip as long as a

Every year, BB plans a local event(s) around the trip’s theme. In February and March by collaborating with other groups, we will offer a dialog series for our community around “Slavery and Our Roots.” Each event will have a different focus and format giving the community a number of ways to participate. The series will open with a lecture on “Slavery in New York.” There will be Film/book discussions on “Slavery Today” “Northern Slavery and Racism,” |

parent or guardian accompanies the child. There is no discount price for children. To help families pay for their child’s expenses BB taps its Shako:wi Finlay Antone Youth Scholarship Fund. Annually, the fund is split equally among the children on the trip.
A bit about the trip: Early on Saturday, April 11, we will drive to New York City for a tour relating to African-American history in Lower Manhattan, ending up at the African Burial Ground at 290 Broadway. On Easter evening, we will arrive at the Penn Center, St. Helena Island, SC. On Monday and Wednesday we will explore the island and have cultural lessons at the Penn Center’s museum. Tuesday, we will visit the Avery Research Center in Charleston, and Thursday, the Civil Rights Museum and the First African Baptist Church in Savannah. We will head home on Friday and be back in Syracuse on Saturday, April 18. This week-long trip is during the April school break of the city and suburban school districts.
